New main transmission line to strengthen the main grid’s transmission capacity from the west coast to Southern Finland

Fingrid is building a new 400-kilovolt main grid transmission line from Kalajoki to Jämsä to transmit electricity from the major wind power production hub on the west coast to consumption sites elsewhere. The transmission line, known as the Lowlands Line, will be completed in 2027. It will enable new customer connections to the main grid and improve the overall security  of the power system.

Fingrid explored preliminary possibilities to connect offshore wind power to main grid

Fingrid has preliminary identified five areas along the west coast where large offshore wind parks could be connected to the mainland Finland’s transmission grid by the 2030s. These connections would require significant investments in the grid.


The identified areas are Ulvila, Närpiö, Vaasa, Raahe, and Raisio. Additionally, the Inkoo area has been identified as a potential connection area if offshore wind power development becomes feasible in Finland’s southern sea areas.

Maintenance and construction work will limit electricity transmission capacity between Sweden and Finland in the summer


The transmission capacity of the cross-border electricity transmission connection between Northern Finland and Sweden will be lower than usual in the summer due to maintenance and construction work on transmission lines. The modifications and measurements carried out during the outage ensure the operational reliability and safety of the cross-border transmission connection.

Fingrid has made the decision to collect grid service fees from customers between July and December 2024 in accordance with the valid pricing. In keeping with its earlier announcement, the company waived grid service fees for January, February and June 2024.

Fingrid proposes reforms to the grid service fees it collects from its customers. The reform applies to both the connection fees of new customers and the grid service fees. The new model facilitates new connections and encourages regional balance.

Price rises in the electricity guarantee of origin service, effective from 1 July 2024


On 1 July 2024, Finextra Oy will increase the unit prices for issuing, importing and exporting electricity GOs. The reason for the pricing changes is the unforeseen additional costs incurred by Finextra Oy, which could not be reasonably foreseen when deciding on the pricing for 2024.
