Electricity consumption is set to increase sharply – more balancing power will also be needed
Growth in Finland’s electricity consumption is expected to accelerate in the coming years. The increase is driven particularly by data centre and electric boiler projects. At the same time, Finland has a large number of well-advanced wind and solar power projects, although their implementation depends on investment decisions by electricity producers. In addition, more weather-independent balancing power will be needed.
According to Fingrid's study, the efficient placement of new grid connections within Finland's power system could increase the transmission grid’s connection capacity by up to 20 gigawatts. Electricity consumption in Finland is expected to grow rapidly, driven in particular by data centre and electric boiler projects.
Electricity consumption in Finland is growing at an unprecedented pace. Fingrid is responding to this need with its EUR 5.2 billion investment programme. The programme will deliver nearly 4,000 kilometres of new transmission grid. How many new connections — and therefore how much economic activity — this enables depends on how electricity production and consumption are located geographically.
Fingrid will not invoice the volume fee for production and consumption in October 2026. The reason for this is lower level of the power system reserve costs and higher level of the electricity trade result.
