In the Solow growth model, technological progress - also understood as the dissemination of a new technical culture - is one of the key drivers of economic growth. In this context, standardization experts play a crucial role: through the development of standards, they capture technological innovation and contribute to its diffusion in the market.
A recent study conducted by UNI on the economic benefits of standardization activities within the Mapei Group confirmed that the economic value generated by standardization accounted for 3% of EBIT in the case analyzed (2010).
A standard is a document that defines requirements for a specific product, material, component, system or service, or describes a specific method or procedure in detail. Standards are developed by consensus and approved by recognized standardization bodies at national (UNI, DIN, BSI), European (CEN), American (ASTM) and international (ISO) levels.
Standardization committees include representatives from industry and companies, consumer organizations, environmental groups, and health and safety authorities. Standards help companies conduct business more effectively by ensuring clear communication along the value chain, enabling access to global markets, and keeping company experts constantly informed about market dynamics and trends.
The Mapei Group has long been actively involved in standardization activities with numerous experts and holds a leading position in the development of standards supporting business growth and post-sales cost optimization. Vinavil is also actively involved in UNI, CEN and ISO committees in the adhesives and coatings sectors. Thanks to the contributions of Roberto Leoni in the past and Fabio Chiozza today, Mapei ensures continuity in the Presidency of the Unichim Adhesives Commission and in the Italian delegation to ISO TC 61 “Plastics”, which includes the “Polymeric Adhesives” working group.
