January 2026

Dear Circular Economy Community,

Happy New Year to you all! Hopefully the coming year will be peaceful and full of reasons for optimism.

Optimism is justified with regard to the circular economy. While Europe's circular material use rate was 12.2% in 2024 according to the latest Eurostat figures – showing there is clearly a long way to go before the EU economy decouples itself from the linear model – the direction of travel is clear and encouraging. The EU has recognised that the circular economy is a key component of its strategic autonomy and competitiveness and it is proposing measures that will make circular principles part of business as usual: the Bioeconomy Strategy is already out and the Circular Economy Act will be adopted later this year.

But there is more to a shift in attitude than legislation – and there is progress on that front too. The circular economy is no longer just a niche concept. Ladeja Godina Košir, the ECESP chair and CEO of the Slovenian association Circular Change, is currently in Australia to swap expertise on circular practices, and you can read further down about the first repair café in the Western Balkans. So yes, we can be optimistic about the circular economy.

On a more practical note, we will be issuing a special edition at the end of the month providing details on the ECESP Coordination Group work plan. The plan will set out the platform's priorities for the current mandate and give the list of the new leadership groups. They will be more horizontal than the groups set up under the last mandate, and should be an excellent basis for discussion and further work. The special edition will also give details on our annual conference: taking place on 22-23 April, it will centre around the Circular Economy Act. More news on that soon!

The European Economic and Social Committee, one of the two EU bodies behind the ECESP, will be holding a public hearing to gather input for a comprehensive strategy for nature-based biodegradable materials. It will take place on 26 January and you can take part online. More details in the Events section below!

Last but not least, we have a selection of items added to our website in the last month. Some relate to what the European Commission is doing and others look at the broader circular community. Let us know if you're organising an event or tell us about your event's outcome, about what your circular project or business has achieved or about an interesting study – we'd love to add it all to the website. You can either fill in the relevant form or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you!
