March 2026

Dear Circular Economy Community,

Welcome back!

Preparations for our annual conference are progressing well: we are still working on the agenda but you can see how it's developing on our webpage. The call for expressions of interest in organising a booth at the networking village was published last week and will be open until 24 March, so if you have something you want to present to the circular community, let us know. Registration for the conference itself has now opened, so book your place: we're looking forward to seeing you there!

The European Economic and Social Committee, one of the bodies behind the ECESP, is beginning work on an opinion on Advancing the circular economy through responsible resource use withing planetary boundaries, focusing on the upcoming Circular Economy Act. It will be written by Cillian Lohan, who has been very influential in shaping the ECESP, and ECESP co-chair Ladeja Godina Košir will contribute her expertise. The opinion will forward recommendations from civil society to the Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament on circular economy objectives, and the conference will be an excellent opportunity to collect input.

We have an EU Circular Talk coming up on 31 March. It will focus on the EU Ecolabel's role as a tool for boosting the circular economy and competitiveness, and will feature the European Commission's EU Ecolabel team. Register and find out about how the Ecolabel can help businesses by saving them money and reducing risk and what your organisation can do to become more circular.

Next, of course, we have a selection of events, good practices, toolkits and more added recently to our website. If you're in the furniture industry, do give your input to improve a tool and a course promoting the circular economy there. There are events on topics ranging from bio-based fertilisers to rubberised asphalt, companies enabling the resale and reuse of decommissioned medical equipment or improving their data centres' carbon footprint, factsheets on how to initiate circular economy projects at local level and more – enjoy reading about them!

Remember to tell us about your own activities and initiatives - just fill in the relevant form or contact us!

KNOWLEDGE

Bio-based plastics in a sustainable and circular bioeconomy

This study from the Joint Research Centre looks at why the bio-based plastic industry is struggling to achieve real scale. Feedstock sustainability, competitiveness, technological maturity and cost are hindering an industry which could go a long way towards reducing our reliance on fossil fuel-based plastics.

Marginalising waste: A trading scheme to reduce residuals

This report from Zero Waste Europe proposes a bold new idea for EU waste policy: an EU-wide cap-and-trade system to cut residual municipal waste – the waste that remains after prevention, reuse and recycling.
Instead of pushing waste from landfill to incineration, the proposed scheme would put a binding limit on total residuals, creating a strong incentive for waste prevention, reuse, refill and high-quality recycling.

Scrap steel at sea: How ship recycling can help decarbonise European steel production

This report from the NGO Shipbreaking Platform looks at how scrap steel from the EU's increasing numbers of end-of-life ships can help decarbonise the European steel industry, strengthen industrial resilience, create green jobs, preserve and develop maritime skills and build a truly circular economy.

Keep it in use: Retain resource value and unlock economic opportunities

Part of a policy series by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation on accelerating the circular economy transition, this brief sets out a targeted approach to keeping materials in use. A focused mix of policies can promote design, business models and incentives that favour reuse, repair and remanufacturing alongside regenerative practices such as cascading, composting and returning nutrients to soil.
