Prepare for your research journey

Starting your research journey is an exciting milestone in your academic journey. It can feel daunting, but don’t worry, King’s offers plenty of support to help you settle into student life.

Your digital essentials

Find out about the software and systems you’ll use in your studies on Student Services Online (SSO), the quickest and easiest way to find information about student life at King’s. Then, follow the steps in Accessing your IT account & connecting to the King’s Wi-Fi network to get set-up ready to start your research journey.

Once your IT account is set up, enrol in two key courses to help you prepare for university: the Essential Digital Skills Programme introduces key learning platforms like KEATS and Microsoft 365, while Academic Skills for Learning helps you to build the study skills you’ll need to succeed at King’s.

Build your research skills for success

King’s Doctoral College offer a diverse doctoral development programme, designed to equip you with the skills you need to succeed in your research and to enhance your career prospects, starting with the Doctoral Essentials series. This training gives you the foundational knowledge and key skills to help you navigate your research career at King’s.

Explore Libraries & Collections

Discover more about how Libraries & Collections can support you throughout your doctoral student journey. You can also learn how to access library resources for your subject, including using library search and reading lists, with Library Guides.

It’s never too early to start thinking about your future career. Whether you’re interested in part-time work, finding meaningful work experience, or exploring extra-curricular skill-building activities, King’s has you covered.

Kickstart your career journey

The Careers & Employability team are here to support you throughout your time as a student. The team offer a wide range of services, including digital resources, online and in-person careers events, one-to-one appointments and specific support for underrepresented groups.

Through King’s Edge, you have access to a wide range of extracurricular activities including awards, events, volunteering and more. Explore the various opportunities designed to help you develop your employability skills and enrich your life at King’s.

Building connections

As a doctoral student, you’re automatically part of the King’s Doctoral Students’ Association (KDSA) within King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU). KDSA are here to support you along your doctoral journey, and you can meet them at one of their regular social events.
